Kieni is a dry mill built up by a cooperative of 1,000 small farmers and managed by the Mugaga Cooperative Society. These farms are nestled in a scenic hilly landscape at 1,600–1,800 masl, with most trees dating back to the 1950s and 60s. As a result, the majority of the coffee consists of SL28 and SL34, prized for their bold currant flavors and high acidity - key characteristics of Kenya’s renowned coffee. Some farmers choose to stick with the SL varieties, while others graft Ruiru 11 onto the old SL28 rootstocks or choose the newer Batian variety for new plantings.
